How to communicate your value to employers

Much of the job search process is about persuasive communication: you want to convince a hiring manager that you’re the right fit for the job. To do this, you need to provide evidence to the employer that they’ll find convincing, and present that information in a way that will make sense to them.

So how can PhDs effectively communicate their skills and training to nonacademic employers? In this interactive workshop, you will reflect on the work you’ve done in academia, identify transferable skills, and learn how communicate your value in job documents and interviews.

This virtual workshop is designed for doctoral students, PhDs, and postdocs from all academic disciplines who are wondering:

  • What skills are most in-demand outside of higher ed
  • What skills have I developed while working as a graduate student and/or postdoc?
  • How do I talk about my academic work in a way that appeals to non-academic employers?
  • How can I spot job ads that are looking for my specific skills?

How to Network (and why you should!)

Networking is one of the most important tools in a career transition, but it is often undervalued and neglected by PhD job seekers.

Through networking, PhDs identify career pathways that align with their values, become proficient in the discourses of specific industries and career sectors, receive mentorship and guidance from successful professionals working in the field, acquire tips and strategies for successful job applications, and are made aware of job opportunities in companies of interest.

This virtual workshop is designed for doctoral students, PhDs, and postdocs from all academic disciplines who are wondering:

  • How does networking help me through the four stages of a PhD career transition?
  • What kind of information can I gather through informational interviews and networking?
  • How do I develop SMART goals to begin conducting informational interviews with professionals in careers of interest?
  • How do I create a long-term networking strategy for subsequent phases of my job search?

LinkedIn for PhDs

LinkedIn is the largest professional network in the world. As a PhD student or a postdoc, you might not have spent a lot of time on this platform. But if you’re looking to explore non-academic careers, LinkedIn is an invaluable resource. It’s a platform where you can research different career paths and connect with professionals working for companies or organizations you might like to work for.

In this interactive webinar, you’ll learn how you can design a compelling profile that will clearly communicate who you are as a professional, where you’re going next in your career, and your value to non-academic employers. Plus, you’ll learn how to update and modify your LinkedIn profile at each stage of your career transition and job search.

This virtual workshop is designed for doctoral students, PhDs, and postdocs from all academic disciplines who are wondering:

  • Why is LinkedIn a critical resource in my non-academic job search?
  • How do I write an “About” section for my LinkedIn profile that highlights my key skills?
  • How should my LinkedIn profile change through different stages of the job search process?
