Transition Q&A:
Amberle Heath

What did you hope for in terms of employment as you completed your PhD?

I left my Ph.D. In Criminal Justice program at the University of Louisville in 2018. I now work in home healthcare providing companionship/personal care for Alzheimers/Dementia seniors who still want to live at home.

What do you do now?

I’m a home healthcare provider! I get to help patients who really need me and I get to connect with them and provide meaningful services and build relationships!

How did you get this job?

I was referred to my job via a fried who works for the same company. I was previously employed by another company and wasn’t happy there. I asked my friend whether she would be willing to put in a good word for me with her boss (now mine) and she said yes! It was super helpful to have someone of good standing refer me, because I had her credibility and confidence behind me as I went in for an interview, and was offered the job.

What kind of tasks do you do on a daily and weekly basis?

Personal care, companionship, and assistance with activities of daily living.

What most surprises you about your job?

The moments when clients open up to me about things and I get a picture into their thoughts and feelings. Clients will tell you things that you never thought they would when they trust you and feel comfortable opening up. It’s a pretty great feeling.

What are your favourite parts of your job?

I really love just hanging out and interacting with my clients, getting to know them, and I think the best part is when my client laughs at something I say or do; it’s just an amazing feeling!

What would you change about it if you could?

My pay! 🙂

What’s next for you, career-wise?

Unsure; I would absolutely love to work in a mental health court and contribute to another program evaluation; I really enjoyed that process.

What advice or thoughts do you have for PhDs in career transition now?

DO what is best for YOU!!! Do not doubt yourself but be entirely honest about what you want, what you can do, who you are, and don’t ever give up.
