Over the past decade, enrollment in graduate education has rapidly expanded, but that’s beginning to change. The rising cost of advanced degrees, worries over student loan debt, and underemployment of graduates, have eroded the American public’s trust in the value of higher education.
But the value of a graduate degree should not be in doubt. Americans who earn a master’s or doctorate degree have lower unemployment rates and higher salaries than those with only a bachelor’s degree.
Our research shows that one of the biggest obstacles students face in leveraging their education and training is that they do not know how to job search effectively. In a survey we conducted of over 6000 graduate students, 50% lacked foundational knowledge about the job search and 89% did not feel confident in communicating their value to employers.
When they fail to land a job, alumni blame their education
and their institution.
But it’s not their education that is failing them; it’s their job search.
Through our two digital platforms – Beyond the Professoriate for doctoral students and Beyond Graduate School for master’s students – our partner institutions are able to prepare more graduate students for career and job search success.
By preparing graduate students for career and job search success, universities enable graduate students to communicate the value of graduate degrees to employers, thereby ensuring the reputation and financial security of their institutions.
In this information session, L. Maren Wood, PhD (Director and CEO of Beyond the Professoriate/Beyond Graduate School) will share:
